On our second annual trip to Tidwell Draw in the San Rafael Swell, zero became the photographer, using a GoPro HD Hero camera for the last part of the trip to the Overlook. The music features Theremin parts by Matthew Loel T. Hepworth.

This is a mountain bike video of the Elbow Fork to Burch Hollow section of the Millcreek Pipeline Trail. We rode this on Memorial Day - there were many folks out with their dogs.

Sunset Peak - Gates’ Uncles

My favorite sister Sue and I went on an August hike in the Wasatch to Sunset Peak. We shot some video of some squirrels at our lunch spot by Catherine lake. We were lucky enough to meet three different squirrel species. It was a fantastic day.

I was going to write some music for this little video, but while I was putting the pieces together, the song Gates’ Uncles came up on my iTunes shuffle. This is a tune my friend Nick Bennett wrote, and we produced a version of it for our album “Winter Storm Warning” back in 2001. It seemed to fit rather well, kind of a dark-side-of-the-rainbow experience. So, I saved myself some time and used that music for the soundtrack for this little video.

A trip this spring to the beautiful Tidwell Draw included a walk up to visit the infamous “Tidwell Draw Frogs”. I recorded some of the sounds, including my good friend Ed’s personal rendition of what he thought the frogs sounded like. I wondered what the frogs must have thought of this loud booming frog voice over the pond ( thus the alternate title above). Perhaps they thought of it as possible close encounter or first contact with an alien life form.

A friends challenge...

“I have a challenge for you. I want you to compose an original song that comes not from your years of training and technique. But from your heart, mind, body and soul. In fact, I would ask that you put all technique aside and sing through your guitar ... as a means of expression - an extension of where you are right now.”

May 4, 2007. I arrive at Nick’s house in ABQ to start few days of relaxation and music. We start the machine after getting set up, and this is the first take that was recorded. I’ve produced it a little, but it is essentially a live recording. Nick played the guitar arpeggios, and I played a simple melody. I don’t think I’ve met the proposed challenge, but it feels like I may be on the right track.

Algia represents pain and loss, maybe for something in the future, something you can’t put your finger on, but you feel it for sure.
